We visit the lands of the Liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ, Kwakwaka’wakw A̱wi’nagwis, K’ómoks, We Wai Kum, We Wai Kai, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and nuučaan̓uuɫɁatḥ nism̓a. Along the way we learn as much from the land, its people and conditions as we learn from our mentors, peers and instructors. We want to express our gratitude for this and are striving for traveling with respect.
Vancouver Island is home to a variety of terrain and ecosystems. From its jagged peaks, glaciation and pristine alpine to its exposed coastline, tidal rapids and bountiful intertidal and all the lakes, rivers, crags and surf in between, Vancouver Island is a prime location in which to learn and hone a vast array of outdoor skills.
Classrooms in the Wilderness
With such diverse wilderness within reach your classroom is always changing.
Gather kayak surfing skills in Canada’s surf capital: Tofino. Tackle the challenges of climbing on the world-class crags of Squamish and develop your navigation skilled in the unmarked alpine of Strathcona Provincial Park. The rugged west coast, sheltered Inside Passage, and beautiful local rivers will offer you the opportunity to build your paddling skills and natural knowledge.
The Launch Point
The COLT program’s base is Strathcona Park Lodge & Outdoor Education Centre. Imagine it as its own little village run on the principles of sustainability.
Nested along the shore of Upper Campbell Lake and just outside of Strathcona Provincial Park, the Lodge lies in close proximity to most of the program’s adventures. With beautiful mountain sunsets, a lake perfect for swimming, trails to wander, excellent food to enjoy and adventurous staff to befriend it is an ideal place to unwind between trips.
